Default Any horror stories regarding painted stripes?

I desperately want to get stripes for my 2007 RedFire GTvert - maybe pearl white with metal flake.

I have been to 5 body shops so far looking for someone to paint my stripes. They all say a clear coat will get rid of the hard edge of the stripe and will look sweet. But they say if the clear coat is not done just right, it will start to peel off the edges of the hood/trunk and will require a total strip down to fix.

My first two choices refused to do stripes. They said they had too many problems in the past. If these shops would have done them they would have charged $1400 with clear coat. One shop said he would do it for $1500 and another shop said $600 with clear coat, but I wonder now if he even has a clue.

What have you all been charged for painted stripes with or without clear coat?
Do you think clear coat is needed? Maybe I should put up with the hard edge just for safety.
Have you experienced any problems?
Any shop recommendations for northern New Jersey?

thanks,
-howy

wow thats really expensive around here MAACO was willing to paint my redfire with white stripes for 350 with clearcoat. I ended up putting on vinyl and the white with redfire is amazing, it really stands out. In the next few days though i'm going to mask it off and paint it myself.

You get what you pay for. I run a body shop and 350 doesn't even buy the chemicals for the job, let alone the labor of laying them out right. MAACO... gimme a f'ing break...

Okay, I'm about as far from expert when it comes to paint, but how does $350 not pay for paint and clearcoat?

I had a dent removed from my Vista Blue that required paint and the total (dent removed, paint, labor) came to $400.

Well I paid 1600$ CDN (Montreal). Remember, you can't go back... Get it done by a pro and be ready to spend what it takes.
The look of the painted stripes is incredible especially after a good wax good.

Doing a touch up and blending takes clear and a dab of base coat.

Masking off (correctly) stripes, prep, base color, then remask the rest, clear coat, wet sand and buff... Your kidding me right that you can't come up with more than 350 bucks in chemicals for that job done right?? Go check oout a quality body shop and ask them how much a quart fo PPG clear is, then reducer, then clean up thinner, then catalyst, base color, etc etc. It adds up FAST.

The world still runs on old paint costs for normal folks when they think they can do a paint job for 1200. It aint the case anymore (unless you want crap). A quart of PPG Concept Black right now is about 90. bucks. NCP catalyst is about 350. a gallon. The stuff just goes up and up. I've got about 200 in materials along in my trunk logo delete and that is wholesale PPG costs.

Go for the 350 job... I'm saying you'll get what you pay for. Park my stripes mext to your 350. stripes and lets look at then 5 years from now as well... you'll see the difference now and then.

How much would your shop charge to do the job?
Are there any issues with metalflake that I should be aware of?

I paid $3500 for stripes and a few coats of clear on top. This also included getting most of the orange peel taken off the sides of the car as well. The guy that did my car is a pro but doesn't do stripes anymore so it was more of a favor. If you want to get it done right the you're going to have to shell out the money. Here's some pics of when it was done then after. Enjoy!
