The key with the tune is the increased size of the MAF sensor tube. The MAF sees less air coming across it when the same amount of air is entering the engine (smaller tube=higher velocity) but maybe more restriction (stock). The aftermarket CAIs that require a tune have larger diameter tubes to mount the MAF sensor in, though they do allow better airflow, they still read less than stock, and therfore need a tune. The reason the K&N setup and I might guess one of the optional Granatelli setups might not need a tune is that they maintain the stock MAF tube diameter. It is not that the cars computer cannot respond to the changes, it gives the warning lights and goes into safe mode because the information it recieves from the MAF is way out of perameters for the way the engine is running...
