Default OBDII Software/Hardware

This is a long term tinkering project - ultimately, I'd like complete control to see/change everything the PCM is doing in the format of my chosing (which will likely come in the form of a Linux "carputer" with a touch display to replace the skipper 1K head unit).

So, I think I am headed past where the diablo/SCT tuners want to let me go and willing to hack a bit to get there (hardware and/or software), but given that this is a dirt simple interface - I don't feel like paying much to do it... I'd rather spend my money on the hardware and frankly this is my hobby, so "getting there" is the fun part...

Diablo has "Trinity" coming out which looks to provide access via their interface to a lot of things, but frankly, I am going to want to tinker with it even more than what I expect them to give me...

While I have no intention of re-distributing/stealing "locked" tunes (I am not out to steal anyone's lunch money) - I have every intention of learning/knowing EXACTLY what they are doing and changing it on my car if I see fit to do so... It is my car, I have a right to know how it makes its choices...

Poked around a bit and found various things like:
http://www.obdscan.net
http://obddiagnostics.com
http://www.autotap.com

I was wondering if anyone else had started down this path and what they had found doing so?
