so i was at my friends house and her kid had an american muslce car book and of course i flipped to the page with the mustang. they did the whole chevy vs. ford wars and one comment the author made was that people classified the mustang as the 'poor mans corvette'. that little comment just pissed me off

Well, here'a something else to **** you off. Those of us who were "cruising" the streets back in the mid 60's were well aware of the fact that the Mustang was driven overwhelmingly by females. The Chevelle and the Charger were purchased overwhelmingly by guys. The Mustang was NOT originally considered a "muscle car" per se. It was a "pony car." Many girls/women purchased it because it was "cute". Yeah, yeah, I know. By the time Ford got around to placing a large displacement engine in the Stang, the era of the muscle car was almost over. When I ordered my Chevelle in 1970, it was to be the final year of the large horespower engine. I have never heard of the "poor man's Corvette" label, however, as the Mustang was refered to in your friend's book. Hey, who cares! I drove that 70 Chevelle for 36 years and am now having a blast in my '06 GT.

I would think the Poor Mans Vette would be more descriptive of the Camaro or TransAm/Firebird..but the Mustang?? Not even teh same moniker.

And all those women who bought the Mustang and still do today, help to keep the name alive!

+1 I'd say the same thing. Moreso with the Camaro. Sounds like you found an author with an axe to grind.

I find it to be a nice compliment, the Corvette, for the most part, is America's only true production sports car. Remember, the Shelby GT350 spanked Corvette butt in B-production racing in the mid 60's. Yeah, I realize a lot of women like Mustangs, and it's true it's a car for all intents and purposes, from a secretarial runabout to a serious road racer to something John Force travels a 1/4 mile with.
"Poor man's Corvette?" Sure, anyday in my book. IMO

I was an avid Chevy man myself and the Camaro was always classified as the Poor Mans Corvette not the Mustang. To me Chevy or any other GM division doesn't make anything worth calling a musclecar anymore. The True Musclecars were built in the Mid 60's to very early 70's. The new Mustangs are the best recreation of the old True Musclecars and that's why I drive one today. The Challenger is going to be another but the new Camaro is not cutting it with me it doesn't have enough of the retro look to me.

Er... when I think of "Muscle cars" I think of stuff like.. Chevelles, Superbirds, 442s, Road runners, Cudas, 56 Chevys, Challengers, stuff like that.. Like Malibu said, Mustangs really werent considered Muscle cars until very late into the race, when the Boss and Machs started coming out. Alot of the muscle cars that were really fast and powerful back then were from companies that arent very big or dont even exist anymore. And yeah even back then the Camaro and Corvette werent really the same kind of car. The Crovette was a cruising roadster/sports car, while the Camaro because more of a big engine, drag type car. So I dont see how you could even say "poor mans Corvette" to either the Mustang or the Camaro because they werent even made or designed for the same things.. JMO though.. dont take everything in a book to heart. Theres always gonna be people who dont like certain brands and will...embellish their favorite.

I've heard of the Opal as a "baby Corvette" before, but that was just based on body style.
