rubbing noise?

rubbing noise?
i put 20 inch shebly razors on the car and when i turn the front wheels to the right (not all the way, but a pretty decent amount), i hear this subtle whine (maybe something's rubbing?) is that normal? did they not mount the wheels correctly? any help would be appreciated...

RE: rubbing noise?
are you sure it is from the tires? Could it be the infamous clutch pack noise from the rear diff? Tire rubbing would leave a mark on the tire and the corresponding rub point in the wheel well....

the clutch pack noise from the rear diff? what's that? would it happen when turning the wheels? im not sure if the wheels are causing it...its hard to tell, its like a faint whine
actually it didnt happen this morning when i got in the car...maybe its after the car's warmed up?

RE: rubbing noise?
yep sounds like the clutch pack noise. When you are turning tightly at low speed, the rear tires are turning at very different speeds. Our rear diffs commonly have made a noise when warmed up, and required clutch pack replacements. there are several TSB's out on it, and several threads on this board about it.
You can probably find the threads if you search on TSB, or differential....I haven't tried in a while.
I had mine done about a month ago and the noise is gone. but you want to check for rubbing first, I think, because you will get charged if they diagnose your car for a warranty problem and find that your 20" wheels caused the problem.......(I doubt that there is any real argument that the larger wheels could cause the clutch pack noise, but if it is your tires rubbing, they will charge you for diagnostic time).

RE: rubbing noise?
Actually I just drove it again and found out it was causing the noise. There is also a clanking noise from the engine and the service guy was like "oh those are the center caps for the wheels"...yeah right!!! clearly sounds like something is clanking in the engine and about to fall out.
2 things wrong already and ive had my car for 5 days with only 300 miles on it.
oh one more things...could the 20 inch wheels cause the rear differential clutch pack noise? i think the dealer might try to blame it on that, i just wanna be prepared.

RE: rubbing noise?
I don't see how they could make any reasonable argument that the wheels could be causing your rear diff noise....especially when there are 2 or 3 TSB's out on it.......a good dealer with good techs will change it without giving you a hard time....
