Hey its kinda OT but I dont wanna go to OT cause I know Ill never get a straight answer there lol..

Anyone know anything about diesel trucks? Its kind of like.. a story and a question heh.

I was driving to school the other day and this big lifted diesel truck decided he wanted to race me.. so I was like alright.. Ill humor him for awhile. So we slow down and wait for some distance between us and the cars ahead and we do 3 horns and we take off.. no doubt I smoked him but it was cool and he gave me a thumbs up and I did the same and we parted ways to go into a toll booth.. when he came out of the toll booth he really slammed on the gas and a buttload of black smoke came out.. Ive seen lots of diesels do this (apart from the factory ones) and his exhaust was really loud but I heard something I had never heard before. When he let off the gas (for him or the truck to shift, I assume) I heard this really high pitched, almost mechanical ching sound. Anyone have any idea what it was? I thought at first it sounded like a turbine and might have been a blower but it was just when he left off the gas and not all the time. I really liked his truck and one day I planned on getting myself a big ole diesel truck and I want that cool mechanical ching sound too! Hah Thanks guys.

LOL.... yea prob a turbo, i raced one, when i was stock and he was only 1 car length behind me. better watch out for some of them they can be really qiuck for what they are

Yall really think its a turbo though?? I mean it wasnt that fast.. it wasnt a big truck, maybe about the size of a Dodge Ram 1500 (that might have actually been what it was, I cant remember.) I just know it said diesel on the side and had lots of black smoke exhaust... It didnt really sound like turbo whine once I thought about it... at least not any turbo I have ever heard, they have all been a constant whine sound, but this was a really quick, maybe half a second whizzing then "*****" sound. I was thinking it might have been something to do with shifting, like maybe a clutch or something of that sort but just wanted to see if anyone knew for sure.. I have been searching for videos of diesel trucks and I cant seem to find one that sounds similiar...

 

That is -sorta- what it sounded like.. and I say that loosely.. It sounded more "mechanical" than that.. its really hard to describe. Almost like high pitched metal grinding ... but really fast and with a whizzing sound right before it. Maybe the blow off valve sounds different with the hood closed and from a distance etc?

Some of those Diesel trucks are very fast. It's not uncommon to get +100 HP or more simply from a "tune". On a Diesel, getting more HP is often as simple as adding more fuel. That's whats happening when you see those trucks with the loads of black smoke coming out.
