Default What problems have you had with your window tint?

I'm planning on getting my windows tinted, to complete the "blacked out" look of my car.

I've read several posts from people who described problems with the tint being scratched very quickly...but then again, I see photos and sig lines that depict tint quite regularly. It seems that if the scratching problem really is that bad, then nobody would have tint.

Please don't fill out the poll unless you had your windows tinted (05-07 only), and it's been at least several weeks since the tinting.

Had mine tinted about 6 weeks ago. Not one single problem. When I took it in to get it tinted the guy who tinted knew about the problems with the tint on Mustangs and he assured me that he knew what to do. When he had the door panel off to install the tint he put felt of some kind inside which keeps it from scratching. At least it has on mine. I love it, and for the six weeks I have had it on there, not one single scratch.

I hear the felt is a MUST. I had mine tinted (without the felt... the tint installer said it wouldnt scratch and he had never heard of felt). I didnt roll the windows down until 5 days after (just like they say, so that the tint has time to settle). First time I rolled it down, and then back up.. HUGE gash in the drivers side tint. That was... about 4 months ago and I now have approximately.. 20 or so perfectly vertical scratches, rouchly 9 inches long, some larger than others, on both windows. I took it to the dealer and told them the inside of the door was scatching my tint and windows, they said they cant do anything because the tint is aftermarket and not installed by them. Im pretty sure that I have cuts in the glass now as well, not just scratches in the tint, but they wouldnt fix it because of the tint. So when my next dealer visit rolls around Im peeling the tint off the windows and getting them to fix the scratches in the glass under warranty. Then installing the moleskin and retinting.

I havent heard anyone who got the moleskin complain so if I were you, Id just do that first just in case!

The key is to place the felt or moleskin..BEFORE you tint. But here's a little secret..the problem is the components in the door, so your window will more likely than not scratch with or without the tint. So, bottomline..fix the problem before it gets worse and if you have tint, then you have to replace...When I started reading the posts on the scratches, mine had only begun. I am glad I place felt before it got worse.

No moleskin, took it to a random local shop, didn't bother checking for dust/dirt inside the windows before I took it in. Paid $140, rolled the window down by accident within the first 6 hours, several more times within the first several days.

Months later... not a single scratch, looks flawless.

Bought my car used, was 1 year old when i got it.
Windows weren't tinted, but were flawless with no scratches.

Got a tint job on it a few weeks after getting the car, asked the tinter about potetial scratches, said he's never heard of it and it would not be an issue.

Left the windows up for a good 3 days in the sun, rolled it up and down a few times, no problems,
Fast foward about a month later, i have about 7 long vertical scratches in the tint that run top to bottom on the driver's side, and about 4 deep ones in the passenger window.

I'll wait until it gets really bad, then get the mole skins installed, remove the existing tint and get it re-done.

So, what I'm hearing seems to be that if you get the felt/moleskin strips put on, then the tint doesn't get scratched.

Does anyone out there have the felt strips AND have scratches?

I just got mine tinted, I have only rolled the window down a handfull of times ( I dont like to roll it down anyway). Where exactly do you place the mole skin anyway? Can it be done by yourself or does it have to be done by a shop? Thanx.
