Default Hood Struts?

Anyone know what hood struts are for? sorry for the dumb question but I have the common hood flex/shake at over 70mph and was considering hood pins. Do the struts help with this?

Thanks for any help.

Seriously doubt that. unless he didn't lock his hood. The hood has a lock ( the lever you have put push to the right when you pop the hood) to prevent this.

Post a link please. Don't see how hood struts can cause this since they're at the other end. I did read that some guy was driving through the pits and his hood came up. But the hood wasn't locked and was obviously driving too fast through the pits.

Hood struts replace the hood prop. Same as the ones on your trunk. This pic doesn't show them too good, but you can see them on each side of the hood. They won't do anything about your hood shake and you don't need pins to fix it. Just turn the rubber stoppers (there's four of them) and raise them a bit. I did and run 140mph+ for hours at a time and have zero problems. Yeah, a good breeze will shake it sometimes, but nothing I'm worried about.

If anyone knows, do hood pins stop the hood shake at high speeds?
It seems it would still swell and shake, but not be able to pop open.
I would think that the only way to stop the shake would be to create vents in the hood to get the airflow through it.

Please don't commit if you don't know what happened.

The car was idleing to the pits and the headwind at Byron slammed the hood into the windshield.

As to the latch, I just remember having the hood popped. I don't remember if it was latched or sitting on latch.

$2,000 in damage. I didn't say the result was due to the struts. I do not trust them with the size of the hood on a windy day at the car show.

I plan on making some safety straps for the hood.

Hey, Scrambler,
Where did you get those struts?

I visably cringe when someone wants to see the engine because I am embarrassed by that flimsy Toyota hood twig.

I need real struts like a muscle car should have.

You actually have quite a few choices. Here are three of them. I chose the first one due to no drilling for rivets and I didn't like the visual of MRTs. What I like about the Prolifts is they sit low but still hold the hood up higher than the prop rod. The only thing I had to do different with mine is put lock washers where the blots hold the supplied brackets to the hood. After awhile the drivers side bracket would start to turn. I've read of other people having the same issue, but like I said, 2 lock washers and no more problems. I've had them on for over 1 year. Hope this helps....
