Default Painting headlight housings

I saw it done on a roush and it looks great. Take the glass off and paint the black the color of your car. I am goign to do this with my redfire. I am looking at getting a set of used lights and go from there. I have the paint and just need to find the headlights now. What would be involved. Sanding to rough the old surface. Adhesine promoter (which I never have good luck with, always lays higher in some areas and paint doesn't really stick to it), paint, clear and seal the headlights back up. Has anyone done it yet?

Good luck with it. There have been many a destroyed headlights from people attempting this. There used to be someone advertising doing it on TMS and he was charging like $300 or so plus paint, plus your headlights. The "take the glass off" part is what is going to kill ya. Only recommendation I have is bake it at low temp, use a damn sharp razor knife, and take your time. Because remember, once you do finally get it to come off, you are going to have to be able to not only put it back together, but also seal it to keep moisture out.

I'd leave 'em be too, for 3 reasons.

1) They look the best the way they are, no matter the color of your car. I've seen them painted and I'm not impressed.

2) Chances are nil you can remove the lenses and paint them and have them look like you didn't do it yourself.

3) Chances are less than nil that you can ever put them back together and have them stay watertight.

Agreed... Been there done that, it aint pretty. I ruined a set trying to do just what you are talking about. I did buy the $300 setup and you could tell they had a problem with the mod as well. Look in my gallery for a pic of the white headlight mod. Looks good from a distance but like $hit up close. The edge of the clear lexan and the black bucket was all messed up by heat and the prying needed to get them apart. Also, this was from a guy that did dozens of them and he owns a body shop and no longer does it because of the headaches. If you decide to do it, be patient and take your time.

Good Luck!

Tried to do the same thing on Beretta taillights. Now I'm afraid to even attempt it on the Stang.
