Mustang Wagon?
At first, I had the same thoughts as most of everyone that has posted here, but then I thought about it for a second, pushed pause, and stepped back and took a look at the whole picture. Originally I had the same tunnel vision as most, only seeing the Mustang as a coupe and a Muscle car, totally aginst anything different. I never thought I would sell my beloved car though, even if a newer 4 door or station wagon came out.
Then I thought about what this would mean for Ford. There is a higher demand for s sporty sedan/wagon then people think, and Chrysler took up on that and gained some market share. Mustang is a very popular icon, Ford knows that, and their plan appears to be to get some of that market share. There are more people in the world, in the USA, than just hardcore muscle car fans.
Imagine a car, very powerful and almost the same speed as the $45,000 SRT8 series, for $30,000 or even less. You know what that means? More sales for Ford, and more important in this particular situation with these cars, LESS sales for competitors. Ford is hurting right now, and needs better cars with better sales. 300 hp wagon, hell yeah! 300 hp sedan, starting at $25k? Do you have any idea how many people would LOVE that car?
How many people do you know, that USED to have a sports car of some sort, then got married and had kids. It had to go away because "not enough room", "can't carry stuff", "needs more doors". Well, if that can be created, with a muscle car aura, and put money into Ford so we won't see the demise of Ford products, including the Mustang and trucks, then why not?
I had to broaden my perspective, lose the tunnel vision, look at the whole picture. It makes so much sense. Then it would give Ford the ability to redesign alot of newer type vehicles and maybe even put the Mustang back to just a coupe. In reality, Ford really needs it, right now.
Just makes sense.
I am not trying to start anything, just trying to give a different look so people can understand maybe a little better.

I agree that Ford needs to have a nice sport station wagon.
However, it needs to look something DIFFERENT from the Mustang. It's going to have to be a whole new chassis anyway, unless they want to use a Taurus chassis to save money, without doing a lot of retooling.
Dodge's Magnum has the styling and a big engine, despite the fact that it really doesn't have any real hauling room in it if you're going to carry 4 people. Chevy was talking about re-releasing the Chevy Nomad, which would be a smart move for GM, to get away from the gas guzzling SUV market (People want STYLE, hence why they moved away from the minivan market and into the Expeditions, Suburbans, etc).
Now they want something that's a little safer, still gives them that amount of room to haul people in, and have room to store all the groceries, kids' toys, etc.
I dunno...Maybe bring make the station wagon, give it a retro styling cue from some Ford car in the past, and call it the Ranchero? I'm taking a total stab at this, because I can't think of ANY Ford station wagons that ever were epitomized as a big engined muscle car like the Nomad was, or the Magnum is today...
Dodge is having its muscle car rebirth because they're making some stylish NEW car lines, and rebadging them with names from the past, like the Charger and the Challenger. Ford's only really had the Mustang and the T-Bird, and I think they blew it when they tried to make the T-Bird into a more luxury coupe than a sports car. They should've made it a little smaller, like the '57 T-Bird, given it a 4.0L or 4.6L engine, and it would've sold!

Aint the first time it's been thought of.

I actually think it looks pretty good- because it has the mustang looks, but it would ruin the mustang. it would show that they do not tke muscle cars seriously. that might be chevys (camaro) best marketing tool. " we don't make station wagon muscle cars!"
