Default backfiring

so on a cold start up, if i rev anywhere over 2500 rpms, on the way back down, ill get some fierce backfire popping. some may like it. it scares the hell out of me.

after about 5 minutes of running, it will all but disappear.

any reason for this? any way to prevent it?

Do you mean with the car standing still? When mine had only a few miles on it I got some mild popping when I'd rev it up... nothing serious though. I don't waste the gas reving it up like that now so I haven't heard it since.

regardless of standing still or down shifting. after a few miles when the car warms up its alright, but its not like im in a cold land - its freaking southern california.

I think it's the nature of the beast. When I had my factory muffler on there, when it was cold (meaning the engine, not outside) and I reved it, it would pop. I've since gotten a Flowmaster AT, and that popping is even more fierce. I don't think that pop is a "true" backfire, but I could be wrong. A backfire sounds more like a gunshot rather than that gurgling pop.

perhaps it has something to do with the equality of the cold air outside and the hotter air coming out from the engine. i dont know. either way, i would like to know if there's anything that can be done mechanically.

I think it has to do with the computer running the car rich untill it reaches normal operating temp. The pop is from unburnt fuel igniting in the cat/exhaust. It is normal on most new cars.
