Default O/D off - PERMANENTLY - Recurring Problem

The second time in less than a month that my 2005 V6 Mustang - Auto has acted VERY unusual.

I jump in it to take a ride and notice it seems unusual (shifting at the wrong points, compared to what I'm used to). I don't notice this really until I get onto the freeway where I'm doing a meager 60mph and the engine is running at 4000rpm! This is the second time now that it has happened on this car and it's a little baffling. It seriously seems like Overdrive is permanently turned off, I click the switch to check, but NOTHING happens... Mind you, the O/D Off light is not lit during this problem.

Both times it has happened I pulled over as soon as possible (under a mile) and turned off the car... When I start it back up, it works just like it should... Pushing the button toggles O/D on and off.... And the shift points are back to normal.

Anyone else ever have this happen? Any ideas?

1. Do you have an aftermarket tune?
2. No check engine light?
3. If everything is working correctly, how many RPMs ddoes the car run at 60MPH with overdrive off? 4k at 60 seems like 3rd gear...if it's just the overdrive, it seems like it would hit 4th gear.

Hopefully someone else can chime in here, as I don't own an auto and am not a mechanic

I had a problem similar to that... my o/d off light was blinking and my shifting was very rough... I have a 06 V6 Auto... I brought it into the dealer and it showed the code P0340 (camshaft sensor malfunction) ... they simply reset the ECU and the problem went away...
heres a quick video of my blinking light... ** notice the RPM's its not jumping because im not pushing the button... it was just blinking by itself...

try disconnecting your battery for 5 min, then reconnect it, then take the car for a test drive... if this doesnt help, bring it in to a dealer...
