Barrett-Jackson is quite the event live. I went to the Palm Beach auction last March/April 2006.
Lot of nice cars, lots of people, and a lot of people with a lot of disposable income buying cars. Some get caught up in the bidding wars - my wife and I happened to have lunch with a couple that were bidding, and they said it is very easy to lose track of exactly what you are doing if you aren't careful -- kind of like Vegas, you forget you are talking about real money in the frenzy.
If you get a chance to go to one of their auction events, I think it is well worth the time. (my daughter wanted to know if we could go back again this year, and get bidder numbers -- had to tell her only if she can tell me the winning lottery numbers before we go).

I went to the Palm Beach auction last year and I plan to go again this year. Unfortunately, I don't believe that regular 2005-2007 GT's will be collectors untill 35-40 years from now. The GT500s will definately be collectors as well as the Parnelli Jones/Saleen cars. I think the Foose/Roush/Saleens will become more of a collectors car 25 years from now.

Ibought a 68 road runner brand new then traded it for a 70 Cuda 383, sold it 20 yrs. ago for what I bought it for new, thought I was getting a good deal. All my friends had SS chevelles, Nova's, Boss 302 Mach 1, None of us had any idea what these cars would be worth 30 yrs. later, just like nobody knows what the GT will be worth in 30 yrs. especially if we go to battery cars. I have no plans in getting rid of mine, probably will will to my grandson.
Hehe...My dad and I took my mom last year to Scottsdale for the Barret-Jackson auctions, and she didn't know what to expect. She kept looking at all the old cars and going, "Man, I remember driving in cars like this! Hey, hon, isn't that just like the LeMans and Firebird we used to have? Wow! That looks like the old '67 Mustang we used to have!"
The best part was how she saw a guy walk up to a Bentley that was sitting in the parking lot with a "For Sale" sign on it. He looked at the number, flipped open his phone, and said, "Yes, I'd like to make an offer on the Bentley...$80k? Well...I think that's doable."
She said she nearly passed out when hearing that.
But, she remembers how much they paid for a lot of the original "classics", and we had to explain to her that a lot of these cars were rebuilt by pro shops...She just couldn't get over how much MONEY was walking around her when she was there.
I have a feeling that the exotics are going to make a climb in price over the next few years...Muscle cars are hot right now because of the resurgence in the retro-modern designs that are coming out, plus the rebirth of the Hemi. Once that cools, we're going to start seeing the Italian automakersrising in price again...Next gen gearheads that had the posters of Countaches, Testarossas, Porsche 911s, etc. on their wall when they were kids are going to start wanting to pick them up because they're cheap (I saw a Ferrari that was the same one driven in the old Magnum P.I. tv show go for $30k).
The problems with a lot of the exotics is that they're more difficult to get parts, or more costly for maintenance...

It's amazing how much those cars are selling for! The Hemis today are not at all what they were back then though. I mean i'm 19 now....I bet when im 49 i'll see a parnelli jones mustang rollin across the stage being bid on for huge dollars and i'll be like oh crap, I was about 18 when those came out, haha. I don't think that a regular GT will hold all too much value but I know the GT500s, the saleens, the roushes, and the shelbys will. The Shadrach mustang will also probably be on there because that's a very limited production car with MONSTER HP
I had an '82 Black on Black Mustang GT with a T-Top. I bought it in 1984 for $9000. I kept it in pristine condition, meaning I only drove it when it was sunny outside and kept a car cover on it. Also I kept all the original stuff on it except the radio. I sold it 3 years ago to a car collector who paid $6000 in cash for it. I'm not sure if the car was worth more than that but I feel I at least got my money's worth!
Here's a picture of the '82;

At the young age of18 (in 1991) Ihad a '68 Chevelle, SS 396 L78 - 375hp, 4spd, 4.11's, numbers matched.
I bought it in relatively rough shape for 3.5K. Not a frame off at all but I rebuilt the front suspension, rebuilt the motor, some interior fix ups, new paint.
Sold it for9 grand two years later and thought I did great.I still cry about unloading that car.
I know the 69's were more desireabe butmy SSwas the top of the line peformance packagefor that year. Only thing it didn't have was PS/PDB and obviously AC.
I wonder what it would go for now.
