+1 on the FR500C only a racer would buy a stripped down bare bones version anyway.
ORIGINAL: 05BlueGT

First off, the Shelby has been around for about 5 months now. Second, they already have a car like the one that took you several paragraphs to write up. It is called the FR500C which has been out since the 05 model year.

Besides, putting this car on a diet would mean comprimising the structural integrity of the car. They would have to reduce the actual size of the car to reduce that much weight. Maybe it should be the size of the Mustang II. I don't think the Fox body Mustangs were that light.

I agree. Unfortunately I have to say I am afraid of the camaro to come . I'm hoping ford will put a 5.0 in the mustang for 09 or even 08. I think that would help the mustang at least be more competitive!

Although I don't think they made Shelby with the intention of being the fastest thing on the street or the track. I think it is more of a name. But it is still suprisingly fast for a comfortable street car. Plus it looks so mean and has 500hp. What's not to like? [8D]
Shelby in the past always ment Performance and Speed., I agree, I think that the 07 had become more of a collectors car than a sports car, which is unfortunate.

The New Camaro will have a base V6 at 300hp top weight of 3200lbs and starting around 25K
the 425hp LS2 version will weigh in around 3400lbs and start at 32K
The Challenger is a whole different story, From what I can find is that the whole car is carbon fiber and they leave the hood stripe exposed, and a rummored 500hp 396 6.4L but the car could weight in at 3600 lbs and start at 35K 430 HP and 42K for 500hp. Needless to say both Chevy and Dodge re comming out with lighter cars with more HP, This sucks for the Mustang, Again it's the 60's all over again.

I'll be taking a hard look at the Challenger when it comes out. I'm not such a purist that I'd have to remain loyal to the pony if Dodge does a good job with the quality control.

Very interesting post. I have to admire both your idea for a race-horse and the persuasive writing.

I believe the first Lotus Elises on sale in the USA (and maybe in Europe for that matter) had no electric windows, no a/c...and no fuel guage...

No way is the V6 going to be a 300hp car. The only 300 hp engines GM has are V8 unless factory SC'dand they are not going to SC their basemodel.

The LS2 will be a formidable opponent but dont' believe the hype it will be a piggy too. All the concept trash talk isn't going to mean a thing after it passes throught the production line. The Camaro is going to weigh more than the GT. You are saying that with a 6.0 it will weigh less than a 4.6 both being alluminum. Other than that these two cars will be the same. Same size, same ammenities, it will be a pig.

Now I won't knock your point that the displacement is better and therefore it will be faster but that's worth discussing because the Camaro has always had more displacement than the GT. So this is not a new story. Ford always moves first and GM counters. Every time.
As for the SS version of the camaro beating the GT500. Not stock for stock. Not going to happen.

Main point here is don't believe the hype about how its going to be because of a concept car and the GM rumor mill.because until it passes federal safety standards it doesn't exist and when it does it will be a fatass too.

Only elite cars legally weigh in under 3 having more than 300 hp the mustang and camaro are not elite cars they are working folks sports cars

And I see alot of you are concerned about GM making a car faster than yours. Thats kind of silly because every year a faster car is produced and every day someone modifies their car at home.

If you don't want to get beat start modifying but I'll tell you right now. Someone is always faster.

The Camaro cannot just be a V8 monster, and let the V6 to fend for itself. The V6 will to be a real car in itself. It needs to compete for the market share, not the V8. Yeah, im sure in its first year, V8 will be 50% of production, but after that, the levels will drop off and V6 willbe an powerful car. It cannot be some waterd down rental waste. It NEEDS tocompete with othercoupes in its price range. That means Eclipse, Accord, G6, Mustang, 350Z all will be packing 270+hp in the future. You cannot come to market with a weaksauce 220-250hp Camaro. No sir, not gunna happen.
Theremay be these options avalable -270hp 3.6, then a 300hp 3.6DI, If so, then you are correct we are in BIG trouble.

Your talking about TODAYS power, I am talking about 2008, V6 power, Heck My Wifes 2004 Chrysler 300M has a 3.5L HO V6 Rated at 253hp. and that motorwas in there since 1999.

Holden has that "high-output" alloy V6 which is 260hp today... I'm sure with some work 300hp wouldn't be out of the question.

2006 Volkswagen Touareg Has a 280-HP VR6 Engine
2007 Toyota Avalon 3.8-liter V6, 285 hp
2006 Infiniti M35 3.5-liter V6, 280 hp.
2006 Lexus IS350, RWD 3.5-liter V6, 306 hp
Nissan 350Z new 313HP v6
http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2006/12...-v6-minor.html

But why let a Touareg or an avalon out power a camaro?
I am sure they will be using there new 3.6L V-6 VVT and the HP may end up being between 260 -280
but with simple boltons 300 is not far fetched.

The Mustang is and has always been a platform car.Look back as far as you want from the 289 to the 351 the car was always meant to be added onto by it's consumer. That's why it's priced the way it is.Lets see if there is a Camero or a Challenger that has 300 hp 13.5 1/4 times for $24,000.It will never happen.Thats why the Mustang has stood the test of time and the Camaro and other pony cars have not.Where is the TA?Where is the Camaro?Challenger etc.All going to be Johnny come lately's just like they have always been.Ford has to sell 100,000 units of the Mustang for the car to be profitable. GM and chrysler will have to do the same.If what theier saying is true about the two buy one if you can afford it because they won't be around long.GM and Chrysler are trying to cash in on thr retro style.Mark my words niether of those cars will be around 5 years after they hit the market.Stock Mustang $25,000 whipple SC $8,000 + tune etc $500=$33,500 and 480 RWHP.Mustang>Camaro,Challenger always has been always will be.

2600lbs? - please....a lx notchback weighed more than that!

If you don't want all of those items remove them. All cars coming with power locks/windows saves them production costs. Anyone that complains about these cars either has not owned previous generation cars or just likes to complain. These cars handle better ,brake better, and have more power than any standard v8 mustang ever. To complain about it is ridiculous. Who f'n cares about the new Camaro. They will be overpriced as they always have been. Dollar for dollar a mustang buyer gets more performance. Just like the first generation camaros Chevy is 3 years behind......
