Vince,
So, what's involved in wiring component speakers, as opposed to just a plug and play replacement speaker??

Thx,
Mike

Hey Mike,

Sweet job first off. What was involved in switching your Xm over? I have an XM Roady myself. Do you just have to call XM and give them the serial off the radio and they switch the service? Also, is the antenna the same as the Roady's? I have mine sitting on the inside of the rear deck and it works great there.

Hey George,
Thanks!!

The antenna coming off the back of the Alpine unit is a different size connection than the Roady....(there's a shocker!!) So I just ordered a new terk XM antenna from Crutchfield when I bought the HU. I think it was like 24 bucks or so...I re-routed the new antenna to the same location I was using for the Roady, which happens to also be in the back deck window. Works even better than the Roady antenna did....

As far as switching service on the new HU, I activated the new unit on line, but could not find a spot on their web site to disconnect the other unit on line, so I had to call their customer service....I think they charged like 7.95 or so to activate the new unit....Funny part was, I did not remember having to leave the radio on when I activated my Roady, so I waited actually overnight for the new unit to activate, and it never did.....Called em up, nice Customer Service gal says...."Sir, did you leave the new unit on for about twenty minutes or so for the activation???".......Duh, what a dumb ***...

Mike-

That's the cleanest install I've seen for the single din HU! Did the face/trim come with your HU from Crutchfield? Thanks and great job!!

Thank you very much!!

The dash unit came with the Head Unit from Crutchfield. They include the dash kit, speaker adaptor wires, specific wiring harness for the head unit to Ford wiring, including the secondary harness for the subs / amps.....This is all included in the price of the Head Unit.....

This is pretty much the standard install you will see on here, when switching from a double din to a single din....My only wish is that the cubby hole at the bottom of the head unit had a door on it, or at least came lined with felt or something....crap slides out of it pretty easily upon rapid acceleration.....Not that that happens too often..... I will end up doing something with it....

Thanks again,
Mike

To be honest I have no idea why you would have only replaced the rears, maybe I read something wrong.

Right now I'm running Alpine TypeR 5x7s in the front, rear stock. I'm debating putting the 12" TypeX sub I have laying around in my trunk.

The stock and Shaker speakers are pretty crappy. I've only left the rear speakers in because I bet the Shaker HU's crossovers cut the door speakers off before the door subs, and the door subs highs are cut off before the door speakers, so the rears must fill a gap somewhere.

With an aftermarket HU/amp I would just gut the rear deck speakers. Aftermarket 8" subs in the doors or the rear deck would be pretty cool to if you want to save some weight.

Mike, the install is very easy. You will need to solder or get a set of speaker wires that have a large and small push on connector to hook up tweeters. Scariest part is drilling the hole, measure 10 times, drill once. I picked this location because it was the flatest area and actually worked out very well. Mounted the crossover with a couple of drill screws in Sub holes since I didn't have them. There are other spaces available.
