I put in a Pro 5.0 short throw early this year and also have a bit more buzz/hum in the cockpit - everything is tight and I think it is caused by less insulation/vibration dampening in the short throw shifter. I only notice it when I have the radio volume way down - too me, its worth the slight noise for the difference between the way the Pro 5.0 shifts compared to the weak stock shifter

I believe it's a function of the unusually long shift linkage of the S197 transmitting a vibration to the shifter mechanism, especially noticible when you go to a stiffer short-throw shifter.

Although the HURST is the most oft-mentioned as having a rattle, it seems any shifter can produce some vibration-induced noise as a result of the linkage design. In each case, a solution can be devised by locating the source of the noise and dampening the vibration by whatever means possible. Changing the handle can actually help a lot, because whenever you alter the size, shape, or weight distribution of an object, you will change its natural frequency response.

The Hurst rattle mostly comes from the pivot ball rattling in its socket - I've posted extensively on the solution to that: https://mustangforums.com/forum/2005-2014-mustangs/493769-rattling-hurst.html

Best wishes & good luck solving this issue!

If I was you guys I'd rap my linkage in something like Dynomat to cut the vibration down or out, it just may solve your buzz problems.......

You have removed all of the stock rubber bushings that isolate the shifter. There is nothing in there anymore to stop the NVH from coming through.

There is a guy named CobraBob on www.svtperformance.com and he sells shifter gasket kits for different shifters. He started this when the new shifters in the 03-04 Cobras were having the same noise. I don't know if he has a kit for the S197, but if he doesn't, I bet he can make you one.

I hear that from my stock shifter, its worse in the cold because everything gets stiffer.

Thanks for the plug. Due to the design of the S197 shifter, this is the only application on my website without a base gasket. The set consists of two thin silicone rubber gaskets. They do definitely help, and the set of two is only $3.00.
