I know this thread is old, but I can't help myself:

The letter code is segment based on size/segment:

B: B-Car (Fiesta)
C: C-Car (Focus)
CD: C/D Car (Fusion)
D: D-Car (Taurus)
S: Specialty/Sport (Mustang)
U: Utility (Explorer, Expedition, crossovers)
P: Pickup (F-Series)

So, the DN101 is the D-segment vehicle (D), for North America (N). DN101 is the Taurus.

Some examples:

C346 = Focus
CD338 = Fusion
DN101 = Taurus
S197 = Mustang
U38X = Edge (X designates Crossover)
U324 = Explorer
U364 = Mariner
P221 = F-150
