Default RE: oil change???

Change the oil asap to get rid of break-in metals.

Normally change it every 3000 miles. People like to think that these days cars can go longer, but its simply untrue. Oil breaks down and gets dirty over time. Plain and simple. Check oil at 3K miles and youll see its dark dirty brown. If its dark dirty brown then where is the junk going to go now? In the engine as sludge buildup. Once oil is dirty then sludge begins to form.

Don't think high-mileage oil will save you either. This type of oil has an enormous amount of additives to try and make the oil last longer. Not good. We want oil how it should be, not full of chemicals to help it succeed as a marketing gimmick. Again, check these oils after 3K miles. Dark brown and dirty, therefore sludge is forming.

I know its time consuming and costly, if you buy full synthetic stuff at least, but this is your car we're talking about. This is the most expensive thing you have in your name, besides a house, and you need to take care of it. Don't fall for marketing lies and miracle products. 3K miles for changes. The end.

+1 on the frequent oil changes - specifically for changing the filter out.
As for a good filter, I've read good things about the k&n (isn't that the one the the bolt head thingie on the end?).
I've been using the motorcraft one.
I've read several independant tests where the Motocraft oil filter outperformed most other filters. Only Purolator consistently beat it. At only like $3 and specifically named by Ford, definately use the Motorcraft everytime.

I can say from experience....I was a fleet manager at a previous job, we had several vehicles that I tried as HARD as I could to get the oil changed at 5000 mile intervals, because the drivers could have been anybody in the company, and sometimes the vehicles would stay out for many days, or weeks, the 5000 mile thing didn't always happen, and sometimes that went up to 10000 miles....guess what, when I left, we had 10 vehicles over 100000 miles on them, and about half of them that had over 200000 miles....these were survey vehicles that got treated like crap! Not one vehicle EVER showed any sign of wear because of oil related issues.

I used to be a 3000 mile interval guy, No longer do I see that need. If it was good enough for these vehicles to go 5000 miles, and many times WAY more than that.....it will be good enough for me from now on.

The best way to tell when the oil needs changing is to keep an eye on the levels, and check the color of the oil. If it looks dirty...change it. The 3 mo/3000 mi. is a guideline, as is the 4 mo/5000 mi. If you don't drive the car enough to get any serious dirt, carbonization, etc. in the oil, you shouldn't have to change it as frequently as the guy who's doing daily driving.

6 Qts. - 5W20 Mobil1 Synthetic

Motorcraft FL-820S filter

First change after 500 miles then whatever you believe the right interval is.

I think the whole 3000 mile change started from the people doing the servicing and selling the oil. Used to be the standard was 5000, now we have better oil and most places have been recommending 3000 mile services. Well I'm glad to see a few starting to go back to 5000 miles. For me, its always been 5000 if I do it myself or take it in, other than the first 1000 mile change.

My daily driver is an STS Cadillac and it has full synthetic oil. The computer that is reset at every oil change does show time to change until almost 7500 miles....So, I think the best idea is to look at the oil every time. I change my own oil and even at 7500 miles, the oil that I'm removing the almost the same as the new oil I'm putting in. So who really knows.....it's all in what YOU believe in.....
