The difference between Good quality chrome and bad quality chrome, is normally the thickness of the Chrome plating. If you damage the surface on good quality chrome it will rust. How you would do this is with a lug wrench.
I have seen a plastic insert for a special lug nut socket that prevents damage to chrome, I don't remember where I seen it through. Just wanted to let you know something was out there.

well i got them on ebay, the first set came with the rims when i bought the car and neither have been exposed to salt or any harsh conditions, i just dont get how they are resulting, they must have a ****ty coating of chrome on them, i just want a really good set. Yea it might also be when ur puttin them on and they start to peel as ur tightening them, but that still shouldnt happen, I wish i knew where to get that plastic piece lol

I've had excellent results with Gorilla lug nuts.

It depends on whats under the chrome. Good chroming uses 4-8 different
plating steps prior to the actual chroming. Then there is multiple coatings
of chrome that can be applied.

Most rusting comes from using an impact gunwithout an impact socket. This knocks off the chrome and exposes the raw steel under.I use Gorilla spline lug nuts which have a spline key that fits perfect over the lug nut and then the impact socket malls up the key and not the lugs. My lugs dont have a scratch on them.

They run about $26 a set including the key, give or take a few bucks.

Griots Garage (spelling?) sells a special socket set that will not scratch your lug nuts OR just be gentle next time[&:]
