What to do to quiet exhaust, resonator?
I'm all for big horsepower, but I'm just not a fan of jet engine sound. I like engines that have a sweet spot where it is really loud but all inbetween it sounds like a mild manared Civic.
This is my ultimate goal, but I just don't want to increase sound and ruin a quiet ride. My plan is to use cutouts connected to an RPM sensor to make the car's full grunt only kick in when I'm pushing it,but first I have to figure out how to actually get an HP gain without increasing the sound very much, ie how the main exhaust is going to be. Resonators? Bullet Mufflers in the pipes, you name it.
Let's say our starting point is a Saleen Center Exhaust:

How would you quiet this down, while still seeing a horsepower gain?

Sounds like you could get everything you want by installing CORSA mufflers. Nice sweet idle sound, stock quiet at cruise, really nice performance sound at WOT and zero cabin drone. Another nice feature is they're made of stainless steel. Not cheap, but worth every dime. CORSA also claims a reasonable HP gain.

Why not try going with one of these mufflers?

I get the feeling he isn't necessarily looking to change his sound guys. He is looking for the power of a better exhaust system without increasing his sound. That is going to be very hard to do because to gain power in exhaust you have to get high flow cats (more sound), no cats (more sound), or long tube headers (more sound). You could pop on an X pipe for a different sound and gain a few ponys.
I could be way off base here and if I am, throw in my vote for Corsa but you aren't going to see any gains.

RE: What to do to quiet exhaust, resonator?
Porsch manage to do high flow mufflers that don't make ridiculous sound just fine. Keep in mind sound is not equivalent to back presure.
For example, I have a friend who races semi professionally and the sanctioning body requires track cars to have a noise cap.
Now he could be running a 1 inch pipe on his car and it would produce say 400hp and make 100db of noise. Or he could add a 4 inch pipe and make 115 db of noise at 500hp. However, and this is a true story, they are capped at about 112, so they made him put a resonator on his muffler, that lowered his noise output to 105db but he still made about 495hp.
Therefore sure if you don't add a bigger muffler and make the pipes flow smoother you will see an increase in sound, but if you were to make the car exhaust into 27 inch pipes and then send that into a room designed to deaden sound, and then out the back, the car would see extreem horsepower gains and be completly silent too.
So far the Corsa Muffler and the Cobra Muffler are good ideas.
