Nitrogen in wheels
Anybody run nitrogrn in their tires? Myfriends son ownes a Bmw, Porsche garage and I was just talking to him about getting new wheels and tires. He told me he would balance and mount them for me and fill the tires with nitrogen. He runs nitrogen in his race car and personal car, both are BMW. He says nitrogen improves steering and handling and also reduces tread life and tire failure. He also said that it slows the pressure loss and I can stop by whenever I want to check pressure/add nitrogen. His shop is only 4 miles from my house. ?
honestly, i dont think nitrogen does anything for you...
if i sold it, i would tell you all those same things too, to make a buck.
people have been running straight up AIR for how long now? I dont even know. as long as something is in there, putting pressure on it, so it doesnt go flat, im happy.
how would it give you better handling? it must have some special characteristic where it makes the tires stick to the pavement better?
i could be wrong. it wouldnt be the first time. but until i see mythbusters prove it right, im sticking with air!

Nitrogen is good if you road-race because it does not change in pressure as much as air when heating and cooling, therefore more consistent handling. It can do nothing for tread life or tire failure (i.e., it can't prevent flats). It can still leak out just like air, but perhaps its denser so will not leak as easily; that I do not know. I don't find air to be much of a problem at all. But hey, if you can get nitrogen easily, why not?
I just have an aircompressor at my house and fill when needed.

Hmmm...you got my curiousity up, and maybe nitrogen does more than I had previously heards...check out this website....http://www.getnitrogen.org/
The Molecules are larger and denser, therefore they won't leak out as easy...
When my dad bought his Z06 they filled the tires with nitrogen, so it must do something for handling performance...

Nitrogen is supposed to be more stable than air in regards to maintaining pressure. Its also drier than air so less moisture in the tires is a good thing I guess.
But in myexperience workingwith nitrogenthe pressure still varies a lot with temperature. In some cases where higher pressures are stored it canvary several hundred psi between day and night. ButI can go weeks without checking the pressure on my car tires running ambient airand it will still be the same no matter the temperature. As far as claims that nitrogen will improve handling I'd be intrested in seeing back to back tests with N2 vs ambient air.

i am a GM service manager we are a full line gm dealer!
nitrogen is a great idea! i put ntrogenin all my high end cars, like caddys, buicks, etc
nitrogen doesnt expand at all unlike reg air does! you ckeck you air in the morning and its reads 32psi then you drive 30mins and now it reads 35psi or higher! and for all you 07 stangs and up the silly tire light comes on and off all the time but if you switch to nitrogen you will have alot less problems! because if you sit your car in the garage then go to drive it the tire heats up which expands the air causing the tire light to come on! big time problem in winter! btw if you can controlyour air pressure ofthe tire itwill perform much better which will make your car handing dead on!

It's actually not uncommon for shops to use nitrogen to fill tires. The Costco tire center here in town puts nitrogen in the tires when it mounts them...I don't know if there's any data to prove that it helps better handling or better tire wear, but I know that it's more of an inert gas than compressed air, which will expand and contract with various temperature fluctuations on the track/road.
