I manually shift, but not ALL the time. Whoever voted that manually shifting will hurt the tranny is wrong.
Unless of course you downshift into 1st when you're doing over 50mph. I've actually found that these
trannys won't even let you downshift into a lower gear unless you're in a acceptable RPM range. A
tune may change that. These trannys are a little smarter that the old turbo 400's. I can tell you this,
speed-shifting your manual causes much more wear 'n tear on the clutch than manually shifting an
auto would do to it's internals.
You hit it right on the head... while you might think you are directly shifting your tranny, what you are really doing is telling the computer that you would like to shift... it then decides if it's safe to shift... like you said, the computer won't shift the car into 1st if your doing 50 MPH! It also won't let you do a "neutral slam" LOL!

That being said... I spend a 1/2 day with Lidio over at Alternative Auto.. we spent it customizing the tranny portion of my tune... My car now actually downshifts when I start to slow down (unlike stock where you have to be at about a complete stop before the car would downshift!). So now when I slow down to make a tight turn or I'm coasting down to a stop light, my car is most likely in the right gear in case I want to take off in a "hurry" LOL!

He also got rid of that HUGE hesitation when you put the pedal to the floor and the computer things for a second before it realize you want the car to downshift! WOOHOO!
I hear B A M A tunes for the autos are awesome. I'm hoping his tune does what yours does.

While I respect Doug and all the big tuners out there, when it comes to automatics, Lidio seems to be a step a head... IMHO....

Okay, I added a couple more options, though a bunch of people have voted now, so it doesn't make as much difference.

Thanks for the info, guys. It has been my experience that if I put it into a gear that's a little too low for the speed, it doesn't shift until the car has slowed a bit.

Wasn't aware that there were tunes for the auto tranny. That sounds interesting. I have noticed under certain conditions that if I'm coasting and give it a mild throttle at just the wrong time, it seems to confuse the transmission. It kinda jerks a little.

No. Dougs auto tune down shifts as stock. I've been meaning to email him about that, but I understand he is real busy right now.

I also want to talk to him about disabling the automatic adaptive learn feature. I noticed when on a long highway trip that the adaptive learn feature learns that your on an extended cruise. Then when you get into city driving it takes a while for the transmission to relearn the shifting schedule.

The only manually shifting I do is turning the overdrive on and off occassionally. Generally, it's a good idea in really heavy traffic or in the mountains.

Otherwise, I don't unless I'm decending a really steep grade.

I manually downshift & upshift quite often.

You really cannot hurt the trans by manually shifting it. I had a B&M in a Hemi Mopar years ago, beat the crap out of it and it outlasted the entire drivetrain.

I had the guys at Brenspeed set upshift & downshift points to suite my style and it acts like it should now.

BTW this is one weird transmission, it freewheels more than any other I have had and the plastic shifter is positievly the worst thing I have ever had in a car. Hopefully B&M will make a decent one soon for this car.

I did in my 04, mostly on hills though. It never hurt anything. The only auto I have ever owned. As long as you don't slam it in gear(s), it will be fine. The od button works well in most situations.

I don't get this at all!!!
Why are you shifting in TRAFFIC??? Why is downshifting so important to you? Are you racing through traffic?
I'm just scratching my head!

The only time you want to downshift an auto is when you are headed into a turn and need to use engine braking to get the revs up for your exit and so you don't have to rely on the Mustang's weak stock brakes.
Or if you just enjoy the wonderful sound of letting the engine rev higher than normal...
