I get about 28 mpg, mostly highway and I just keep it in normal rpm range. In city driving I usually let it get up to 2 grand before shifting.

3rd maybe to high RPMs on gas... 5th.. you are wasting gas trying to keep it running at that low RPM....

Read the manual for the manual tranny. It will tell you what the optimum shifting speed is for best MPG.

Low RPM is best but it also depends on a number of other factors.

Low RPM going uphill means you're porbably going to be floored on the gas to maintain speed thus you'll be blowing through fuel. High RPM on a downhill means you'll be wasting gas when you could just be coasting.

And coasting uses the LEAST amount of gas.
