Default Wheel Spacers

I just got 18X10 bullits installed on the rear and 18X9 bullitts installed on the front. The tire guys that installed them were showing me how tight they were to the caliper. They recommended getting spacers to give the rim some distance between itself and the brakes. Has anyone had any problems with this? Or is it fine to run the rims without the spacers? Thanks.
