POR 15 is a brushable product that is better applied on surface rust (google it). No need to clean metal to a shine finish. Wire brush as much as you can and put that stuff on directly. 2 coats are best.
The down side : Don't get any on you, it's real hard to clean. It dries very slowly and the shelf life is short after opening.
When this stuff is dry, you'll need a chisel to take it off! It won't sand very good.
A thin layer of rust on metal components (axle / diff etc) will actually prevent further corrosion. One really should only be concerned with body panels, unless you want to keep the car for 20 years.
|Even tho mine is a summer car I've been contemplating getting mine rust proofed withoil, the service is pretty widely available. I've had my DD and my wifes car done and it really makes the underside shine as well as damping down the rust and keeping things like brake lines and linkages in good order. The oil is pretty much clear so doesn't make the thing look nasty and they do the inside of the rocker panels, doors and all that stuff.
Oil is much preferrable to the other wax based products as it creeps around the metal work naturally unlike wax which sticks where it touches leaving shadowed areas exposed.

Many components on mine are covered in surface rust already. I don't see it as being a big deal.
and its common to have surface rust.
Cataclysm, where are those black saleens? I'm anxious to see them on your car. My chrome CT-R's come in tomorrow.
Ok, just so this is not completely off topic....Yes, my stang has underside rust too....even my water pump is all rusted over. It's not a show car, so I don't really care.

Isn't it sad that Ford don't paint anything underneath that's thick metal? Steering boxes (my F150), drive shafts, rear axle housings, leaf spring, spindles etc... It safe cause it won't rust through anytime soon but it looks like s@#t.
And for those of youwho drive these cars up north in the winter, what a mess!
