Default Tail Light Redout

So my friend came up with an idea the other day to use red vinyl to "redout" the reverse lights on my car to give the back end a cleaner look as the whole tail lights would then be red. The results can be seen below, and I think it came out pretty good as the color match is exact and the reverse lights no longer pop out from the rest of the tail lights.

Comparison between stock and the "redout" look:

And an upclose of the tail light with the vinyl on it

Anyways, let me know what you guys think. If you like it a lot, he has sets for sale on eBay pretty cheap if you're interested in purchasing a set:

Can you see behind you at night when backing up? Looks cool, but it may be against the law. Pretty sure you have to have clear lights for reverse. If someone hits you when you're backing up, they may have a case if your reverse lights are red like your tail or brake lights.

It IS against the law to do that. You have to have white reverse lights, backing up or not, an observant cop behind you will give him reason to pull you over.

I think it looks good but I'm with the others. I don't think it's legal and I dont want to give a cop another reason to stop me!

[sm=badidea.gif]Just another reason for "the man" to pull you over, next thing you know... you're screaming Don't Taze Me Bro!
Seriously, that puts you at fault if an accidentoccurs for not having legal operating equipment, looks good though[sm=smiley20.gif]

Definitely illegal. You must have a white backup light. If you are ever on a dark road and have to reverse, you will be in big trouble.

I agree it's cool looking and cleans up the look of the car, but I would worry more about backing up than being pulled over. My friend had something similar on his car awhile back and took them off fairly quickly after realizing that that he couldn't see anything when backing up at night!

I noticed the same thing about s197's. I would like to do the same mod and then install some reverse lights into the bumper like this old beauty:

As far as legality, I wouldn't worry about it. I've done tons of "illegal" lighting mods and never really caught guff from the police about it.

But I am with the others about backing up...I mean how are you going to be able to see?
