But I took some fine sandpaper to the damaged area and I was able to fix it enough that you can't see it unless you're looking for it. Would not work on chrome or polished but brushed ones would work fine.
I would think that most brushed aluminum rims have some kind of clear coat. Was this not the case with your situation? Before and after pics of the damage?
