Some of you guys have got to be kidding me.

DON'T FEAR THE GEAR, period.
The steeper the gear, the faster the car. Traction permitting, the 4.30 car will be faster than the identical 4.10, 4.56 faster than the 4.30, 4.88 faster than the 4.56, and the 5.13 faster than the 4.88. Above that, the gains severely diminish, and the time it takes to shift becomes a factor to an extent.

Let's race our 21-speed mountain bikes. You start in gear 3-7 (highest gear), and I'll start in 1-1 and shift through ever gear on the way up. I wonder who is going to win the race. Alternatively, next time you are at a light with someone, try racing starting in 2nd gear and see how much better you fare compared to using first too but having to make the 1-2 shift.

Hopefully the common sense will dispell the rumors.

Edit: I should clarify that with many cars, including ours, this "the steeper the gear the faster the car" theory only holds up flawlessly through the end of the 1:1 ratio gear, ie 4th.
Exactly.

I just put 4.10s in and honestly I was not as impressed as I thought I would be. I wish now that I had done 4.30s.

This may be a NEWBIE question, but do you have to re-tune the car after you throw the 4.10's in there?

You have to adjust your speedo but no tune

And you use your tuner to make that adjustment (one of the 'user adjustable' settings)

I have 4:10s and think 4:30s would be overkill. I have a hard enough time getting traction in 2nd with them without going to 4:30s.

i got 4.10's and here's my take. i was impressed, but immediately curious of the 4.30's. i lost about 2mpg on the car all around. the car feels like it picked up a new gear, likea 6 speed w/out the 6th gear. i think if you go to 4.30 you might lose another mpg overall, but it would be a lot more fun than 4.10. i say go w/ 4.30 and don't look back.

I had 4.56s for a brief moment before deciding to go back to 4.30s and run a 125shot [sm=smiley9.gif] . The small step up to 4.30s may only be ~5%, but it actually made driving easier...under normal conditions the car became a 3-speed -- 2nd, then 4th, then 5th [8D]

Thanks everyone for all the feedback on here. I'm pretty confident I'm gonna do the 4.10s. I still plan on taking my car on road trips, 3-5hrs driving at a time so it just sounds like the best compromise between performance and mileage.

I just got my exhaust done so this will be next. I should of just chose to do drugs instead. It would have been cheaper.
