If it's through the clearcoat, you're gonna have to repaint it[&o], but there is a solution that won't break the bank. Many pro detail shops specialize in repairing scratches & chips. They fill in the scratch/chip with touch up paint(thinned down to match car's color) and use fine color sanding to blend it all together for a seamless repair. Not for the novice, for sure, but it would be much less expensive than having an entire panel repainted at a bodyshop. I beleive Eastwood Company has a kit to fix clearcoat scratches. Hope this helps.

Yep like 05gtdriver said you most likely will need to have this repaired by a body shop. Sounds to me if the color has also been damaged that you are down to the metal. You can do as he suggest to try and save a little money and try to look in the Yellow Pages for a company called Aero Colours I think it is. They are pretty good at hiding thing

If down to primer or metal, you may have to repaint...

I had a really deep scratch on my roof (from either a rock or a cat claw, not sure...my cats are on my car a lot in the garage but I don't know that a cat claw could go as deep as this scratch was) and when I took my car in to the body shop for other repair work I asked them to work on the scratch to get it as fixed as they could without repainting. They told me they'd do their best to get it to buff out. They did not tell me details of what they did but the scratch is totally gone now. So anyway, in the right hands deep scratches can disappear without repainting...just do some checking around.

The easy test is with your fingernail. If your fingernail catches in in, you're going to need to paint it. Most likely it will need painting. -Joe

Try and take it back to the dealer if it is under warrenty. i had a deep scratch on my hood i took it back to my dealer as soon as they opened up and they had there man that does all the touch up paint jobs do my scratch for free! I only had to leave it there for about a hour.
