Mustang Chassis
The Mustang is not built on a mazda chassis. The Mazda 6 is a front wheel drive platform. It is built on the same assembly line as the mazda 6 at the Ford-Mazda Auto-Alliance plant in Flat rock, MI. The platform of the Mustang is derived from the DEW98 platform that is used for the lincolm LS, Jaguar S-Type and Ford Thunderbird. However, it quite heavily modified to reduce both cost and weight. The original DEW platform has a double control arm suspension system at all four corners. The Mustang uses Struts in the front and a live axle in the back. The 2006 Cobra does have independant rear suspension, but it too is different from the DEW design. I don't think there are actually any interchangeable parts between the mustang and lincoln, but the floorpan is apparently similar. The new Mustang is actually the first one in the history of the nameplate to have a completely unique platform that is not directly shared with any other vehicle. The original gneration (1964-73) was built directly on a Falcon chassis. the Mustang II was a pinto in disguise and the 79-03 model was a ford Fairmont. This one is truly pure mustang.
Thanks guys. I didn't think it was because I had not read anything about it in the vast amount of articles out there. And this takes some ammunition out of the hands of my rice burning, mini-van driving coworker. I don't doubt that it may have some foreign parts but this pony is all american. Gitty-up!
