Default Need electrical help...

I just ordered a Beltronics STI Professional Radar Detector and it comes with a direct power cord. The instructions for this are as follows....

Direct-Wire
Power Cord

The Direct-Wire Power Cord comes with connectors to allow easy hook-up to your car's electrical system.

The black ground wire is fitted with a lug to allow it to be installed under any grounded screw under your vehicles's dashboard.

The red striped wire for +12 volts is fitted with an insulated 1/4" male spade lug. We also have supplied a special 3M connetor that allows you to tap into an existing wire in your vehicle. This connector can be used only with wire guages 14 through 18.

To install the connector, position in around the wire you wish to tap into, and squeeze it with pliers. The Direct-Wire can then be plugged into this connector. Make sure the clear insulator sleeve on the Direct-Wire completely covers the connection.

Basically I am trying to figure out what wire is best for this crimp and how best to get at it. Thanks a mil for the help!

if it were me......i would use
a mini add-a-circuit (pic available
if you need it) and use (unused) fuse position
13 (passenger foot area fuse box)

for the ground, i would use the ground
screw located behind the glove box (pic
available if needed)

this way you can isolate your device(s) with
fuse protection.

are there other ways to accomplish your
objective? of course.....

I am extremelyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy electronicly illiterate when it comes to cars so I understood about 1/4th of what you said. I can get a fuse that will have a power cord comming out of it for the fuse box? is that correct? well assuming thats correct my radar detector would get power from that how? and also the radar detector has this hardwire settup with buttons on it how would I adapt this to the fuse attachment?

well hope you can offer assistance here thanks

Nix the install by yourself and get someone to put it in for you
that knows what they are doing. Dont use that 3M wire tap
device that was included with the radar detector. Go to
AutoZone and ask them for the fuse tap device and wiring
advice.

Off subject, can someone help me bake a cake?
I am extremelyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyykitchen illiterate.

Since Hammy's offline, I will throw a couple of pics up, that are the pieces he was describing.....

First pic is the Add A Circuit referred to. Be aware that when you go to the auto parts store to get it, you need the smaller size Add A Circuit for our cars, not the standard fuse size. They will have both.

Second pic is showing the Add A Circuit connected to the fuse box inside the passenger side kick panel fuse box. It is connected to a different fuse than Hammeron referred to. Use the one he noted, as it is switched power, not constant hot.

Third pic shows a ground screw that is right in front of the fuse panel. Very convenient....

Hope it helps....
