Snow SUCKS!!!
Well this afternoon it snowed in Western Maryland where I go to college. It was not supposed to snow but the storm changed directions toward my school while I was in class. I came out to 3 inches of fresh unplowed snow. Anyway the road on campus back to my apartment was up hill and twisty. There was an accident at the top so it bumper to bumper all the way up, since I lost momentum every time I would try and move up a space it would spin and move like 1cm. I tired everything from D-1 gear, with traction control off because with it on it wouldn't even let me move it just held the brakes even when I backed off the throttle. So it took 45min. to go a half mile. Also I got the best traction in gear 1 with traction off. While I was going someone was sliding down the hill and I had to move or they could potentially have hit me, so while in 1 gear I hit the gas and it went to 70mph and moved like an inch. Could this hurt the car or transmission since normally on dry ground 1 gear won't go past 20mph?
My question is what is the best technique in these situations. I do not have snow tires and would like to not have to buy them. And my trunk is completely empty, should I put like 50lbs of sand bags in there or like 200lbs?
Pictures might be bad, taken from my cell phone.

I wouldn't worry about any damage, as long as you didn't overheat or push the rev limits too much.
Knowing Maryland (lived there 5 years), it will all melt in a day or two anyways! If only I was so lucky...[:@]

How did your speedo read 70 in first? Isn't the relationship engine speed to tire rotation essentially with the gearing? Engine load regardless, 5000 RPM in first gear should be the same "tire speed" moving or not, right?

Save the $300 youd spend on snow tires and buy a winter beater. All it needs is heat and wipers.

besides Id rather be in my mustang than some beater.

if you drive the stang, put 200lbs in the back. you wont believe the difference. The first year I had my car, I did nothing, and got stuck left and right like you did, but then last year I put in the sand, about 200lbs, and I havent gotten stuck nearly as much. I also have snow tires though.
We got an ice storm this week, and I was able to get around moderatly fine with the sand. I will probably try to find a beater next year though sinceI will have mynew stang.

I had 150lbs of sand in my trunk last year and it didn't help as much as I thought it would. I found myself launching in first gear with t/c off, then turning it back on when I shifted into second. The fact that I got 40-50 more hp this winter won't help, it has snowed once this winter already and I was getting wheel spin in 4th at under 1500rpm.
