shifter rattle - plz help!
hey all-
i've been meaning to ask about this problem, but haven't gotten around to doing so; been way too distracted by other mods. anyway, shortly after i bought the stang in march, a friend of mine installed the pro 5.0 shifter for me. at the time, i was intimidated by the idea of doing it myself, so i let him handle it. since then, i've tackled quite a number of projects, and constantly read up on things thanks to these forums, and have significantly improved my car knowledge, but of course, i still have tons to learn! anyway, here's my question: when driving upwards of 40 mph or so, there's a strange rattle kind of noise that i'm almost 100% certain has to do with the shifter. the noise started after its install, and i think is due to the lack of bushings of some kind, or at least that's what my friend thinks. does this sound right to anyone? what are the bushings and where would they be? any other ideas?

My Steeda Tri-ax doesn't rattle, but it does transfer some transmission chatter noise to the cabin....especially in 5th gear, it sounds like the car is lugging. We're having cold weather...in the 40's .....right now so there are lots of noises in the car. If I could get rid of that "inspection plate" rattle for good, I'd be a happier person.
I have the pro 5.0 shifter and love it. The only noise mine makes is in 3rd gear, when I'm coasting down. It's not a rattle as much as it's tranny movement coming through the shifter due to the solid bushings of the Pro 5.0. I would get underneath your car and double check everything. maybe something is loose, or not installed correctly. If I remember correctly, there is a two part bushing that must be installed in the correct orientation. Maybe this is your problem.
I have a similar rattle in my Pro 5.0 after 3k rpm during hard accleration. Could be a number of contributing factors. Im taking it in soon to double check install and check pinion angle as well.
Also have the rattle in the E-brake. Anyone know how to fix??

I had a similar problem with my T-56 and shifter --- Try this, it works wonders --- CobraBob Link

Are you sure its the shifter or could it possibly be the E-brake handle? In my case I'm pretty sure its the E-brake.

hey guys, thx for all the replies so far!
1. i'm almost 100% positive that the noise is not coming from the ebrake. the sound is definitely isolated to below the gearbox, somewhat towards the passenger side. plus, it started only after the pro 5.0 was installed.
2. i think it might have something to do with bushings, but i'm not sure where to look honestly. since i didn't install the thing myself, i have no clue about it (last time i let that happen)
3. and maybe i should try to explain the noise better - it's not the shifter itself; that thing vibrates and rattles a bit on its own and i'm familiar with those sounds. usually i just keep my hand on it to quiet things down some. it's coming from below the shifter itself, almost like from underneath somewhere. i guess i'm mostly wondering if there were bushings where the stock shifter attached that didn't get reinstalled when the pro 5.0 was put in... does anyone know anything about that?
