Default torque converters?

hey guys, i have seen several ppl post that they are putting on a new torque converter. i have no idea what a torque converter is, or how it will help our performance. also how much does one of these things cost with an install?

I´ll just let someone in the mood of doing a good explanation to do it.

But I´ll tell ya that i´m very happy with my PI multidisk at 3,500 stall, best mod i´ve done to the car so far I think, though its not cheap, almost 1K dlls not counting instalation or oil you will need.

Default RE: torque converters?

A torque converter came with myrace transmission. Mine is set atat 3400 rpm.Don't know how it works but it's my understanding that it has a multiplication effect at the lower end. The trade-off is that it produces more heat at constant highway speeds and excessive heat can kill a transmission. To get my car going at 55 mph down the highway for a few miles, I have to engage the electronic overdrive which lowers the rpms and then press the red button (not the redbutton of top of the shifter, that's the transbrake)which is the torque converter lockup. This disengages the torque converter and you can see the transmission fluid temp go down instantly.
