Checking trouble codes without scanner?

My old cars you did this key trick and it would flash the codes. Can our cars do that? My CEL is on and I want to pull the code before I bring her in. I hate the stealership and try to avoid it at all costs.

Take your car to AutoZone. They'll bring out their scanner and tell you the code and what it means.
