Default 18s really work?

Was looking to do a brake upgrade and no matter what kit i look at, the kit says 17" wheels or larger required...Most kits that I have seen have been on 20" wheels and I have yet to see a car with 18's and a brake upgrade. anybody know a wheel that will work with a big brake upgrade? I'm looking at the AP Racing 4 or 6-piston kit to install in the future after some suspension work. Anybody with any imput would be helpful because I really wanna keep 18's instead of going to 20's...
