I may be wrong but hasn't Ferrari been using IRS since the 60s?

Jaguar won Le Mans in the 50s with IRS and inbord discbrakes[8D].
Also, somepre-warEuro cars had superchargers[8D]. If you can believe that.
As far as Mustangs, Ford found out that the IRS on the 03/04 Cobras didn't deliver the goods for the investment.
I'm sure it'll be more efficient on the S197 platform, since it's build stronger.Someone might designone yet.

AWD adds weight, decreases fuel economy, and will likely decrease acceleration as well.
But it'b be wicked for some of the people on this board who are mofiying their Stangs for serious RWHP.... weight gain wouldn't be a big deal and you'd get to put that power instanteously onto the road.

Yeah I didn't want to make any blanket statements about whether AWD would increase acceleration because there's too many factors involved.
An AWD BMW 328i is be slower to 60 and in the 1/4 due to the power loss through the drivetrain and weight gain than a rear wheel drive 328i. (Sure you might gain a small amount of traction from the AWD but it doesnt offset those two factors.) But on cars with enough power that actually have traction problems from a dig the AWD would actually improve 0-60 and quarter mile times like you stated.
Just not sure if a stock S197 as they are now except with AWD added on would improve 60 and 1/4 times... but I suppose in theory it would improve them like the GT is pretty monstrous so I was probably wrong in that regard about AWD decreasing acceleration in this specific case. I'd bet it'd worsen times for the stock V6 however.
