Not sure this is true, 275 is the width of the tire in mm's. The 55,45 etc is the aspect ratio and has nothing to do with tire width. The only way I could see that the aspect ratio would have an effect on what width rim you are putting the tires on is if they allow a tire with a taller aspect ratio to be put on a narrower rim because the sidewall would be easier to pinch together to install on a narrow rim. The problem though is if you mount a tire on a rim too narrow is you make the middle of the tread buckle up and the sidewalls bulge out.The only way to adjust for correct contact patch is to under-inflate the tiresto flatten the tread and this could adversely affect handling.

Ihave 275-50-17 onmy rear 17x8 Bullitts. The measured rim width for this tire is 8.5 with approved rim widths between 7.5 to 9.5. The series of tire (55,50,45,40,etc.) helps determine the rim width not only the size like 275,265,etc. Look it up,to many people seem to group the 275 sizes into one rim width which is not true.

The taller the tire relative to to the width the narrower the wheel recommended.
Im not sure why this is true but it is.

They look more like factory 235/55R17 or at most 255/50R17.
