A long, long time ago (ok, it was 1977 and I was 18 years old), I had a '70 Cougar with a 351Cleveland and dual-quad tunnel-ram (some seriously old, poor-quality scanned pics are attached). Before I changed the stock 2.73 gears, I took it out on a deserted road and maxed out the speedometer at 120mph in 2nd gear, and it was still accelerating well into 3rd gear. Not sure how fast I went, but it had to be 150 at least. That was the fastest I've driven personally. Scared the hello outta me... lol.
Obviously, the 2.73 gears would not work on the strip, so I put 4.57s (or something in that range) in it. It still ran about 123mph in the 1/4 mile after that. It had a auto tranny and, unfortunately, the torgue converter stall speed was way too low for that set-up and it didn't launch well at all. So, the best it ran was low 12's/high 11's... but it was a monster once it got to about 3500rpm, and those big-valve Cleveland heads could breathe.
I did put a new torque convertor in it, but 2 days later I was involved in a motorcycle accident that busted me up pretty bad, and I never drove it again (had to sell it to pay the bills). Sure wish I had it now... it would be pretty unique.

what an awesome car. i was born 40 years too late friggen smog and safty ***** making cars lame as hell. sorry to of on a tangent but when exactally did washington decide that we were to dumb to decide FOR OUR SELVES what is safe enough. can airbags be an option? shouldnt it be up to ME to decide how safe MY car needs to be?

his "car" is "stock"! even if your going down hill, the car runs out of gearing/hits redline before 160. and how would you know that your doing 160 the spedo only goes to 145.

Don_W - That is one beautiful motor! Those cleveland heads are the most impressive things I've ever seen. I've had the pleasure of owning a 2bbl cleveland, and I remember those intake ports were friggin huge. Then again, the 4bbl heads could swallow small farm animals - unbelievable. BTW, we have similar stories... in 1987 when I was 18, mine was in a 65 Mustang - never got to run any passes with it before . . . you guessed it; motorcycle wreck. Hi-side at 110mph on my V-Max - I "flew through the air with the greatest of ease" and (literally) 50 yards later I hit the ground like a rag doll. Then bounced and slid for another 50. My knees and elbows still look like..., well, they're not pretty. Then came the medical bills - bye-bye Mustang.

The fastest in a car was in my old 1996 STS - the thing shifted into 4th at I think 130, and immediately thereafter the computer casually scrolled the message "maximum speed - fuel shutoff" and the car peacefully glided back down to about 120 before coming back to life. On a bike, tho, it was 154mph. That was on a 1990 FZR600... Anybody wanna loan me a Hayabusa? I won't hi-side, I promise!
