Default Yes, another rattle (sometimes thunking) thread

I have searched the numerous rattle threads and really couldn't find what is happening to me. My rattle only happens when I am going uphill on a winding road or after driving for a few hours. And once it starts it will happen at any rpm, speed, and even on level ground. Am I making any sense here? It's actually more than a rattle. There is the obvious metal on metal rattle, as well as squeaks and a thumping sound similar to someone hitting something really fast with a rubber mallet. It sounds like it is coming from my driver side exhaust so I took it to Midas and it turned out I didn't tighten my axle-back clamps enough and there where some leaks. Other than that they could find nothing under the car that could obviously cause the rattle. All my pipes had proper clearance no other parts where loose. They tightened the clamps and I took it for a drive. Well, the clamps where not the solution. The noises are still there and just as loud as before. And for some background info I have the Mac axle-backs, the rest of the system is stock. Anyone have any input?

didnt you have to loosen the clamps on the rest of the exhaust to install the mufflers? Sounds heat related

I only had to loosed the clamp that links the muffler to the over-axle pipe. I installed the MACs by removing the hangers. The guys at the shop looked at the hangers though and said they were tight and not the problem. And as I mentioned they tightened up my clamps yet I still get the noises.

Sounds like pinging. Do you have a 91 octane tune you could try?

I just fixed the vibration in my center console. It would vibrate during acceleration, especially in low gears. I just removed the side modelings around the radio and took out all the screws. Stuffed a little foam in there and voila!

I'm sure it's not ping. The engine still sounds as smooth as when new even during the rattling. I had to go to the store today and all was fine until I was just about there. I was sitting at a red light and when it turned green I just tapped the gas, as I was trying to keep it easy because of the rattle. Well, as soon as I touched the pedal there it was, and this was one of the loudest times yet. The rattle then stayed with me until I got to my destination. On the way home the car drive fine with no rattles. It is without a question a metal on metal thunking sound yet when I get it checked out nothing can be found.

My car 2005 V6 AT has the same problem with all 3 tunes from VMP ( 91 performance, 87 performance and 87 gas mileage). I reload stock tune and no more noise. I am afraid of that the tunes will destroy my car ; So, don't use the tunes. Reload stock tune to see what happens.

So far the shop and I have determined that it is not engine related, and everything in the rear is tight with all the proper clearances. We also determined that nothing in the trunk was the cause since it rattled the same with it empty. The only other cause we can think of is the baffling inside the muffler being broken. We're going to look into that more in depth tomorrow and worst case I'm going to contact MAC for a replacement because they are not that old and they should not break this soon.
