Default Possible paddle shift $250 to $500

Depending if parts are bought new or used, this setup will probably cost somewhere between $250 to $500 for parts before fab work.

I’m not for sure if this will work but it might. If the Thunderbird, Lincoln LS, Mustang have the same or similar transmission then this should be possible. You’ll need a select shift shifter from a Lincoln LS. Some fabricating will be needed to make the LS shifter fit into the Mustang console. From what I understand it only takes the shifter to add shifting capability to the car. Some of the people who did this in the LSs lost D4 (equivalent to turning overdrive off with our cars). A programmer should be able to add D4 back, but if you manually shift into 4th it shouldn’t need programming to see 4th gear. Overdrive and other gears should not be affected when not using select shift. Here is a link on adding shifting to a not select shift car. http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/sho...paddle+shifter

Now for the cool part. Paddle shifters. Here is a link on adding paddle shifters to an LS with select shift. http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/tec...ifts/index.htm and http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/sho...t=select+shift If the select shift works in our cars then adding the paddles should work too. I don’t know but it may even be possible to add paddle shifters cheaply without using the select shift shifter, but I don’t know. I don’t car about the select shift but I think paddles would be awesome.

Maybe. I really want someone else to try it first to see if its worthwhile. I had the select shift on my LS. I didn't use it much but I didn't know about the paddles until after I had upgraded to the Mustang.

even with the paddle shift, it will still shift just as low as it in D. Now there will be user error when shifting so you will actually be slower instead of having the computer shift for you...

True, but for the people who I've seen posting $1400 kits, this might be a better alternative for them. It might fun to play with too. I wouldn't use it for racing but racing is not everything to me. Sometimes I like to just play and have fun with the car. Thats what the Mustang is to me a FUN car. I'm just trying to find a new trick for the pony in case someone wants to give it a try.

The 5r55s, 5r55n & 5r55w have been used in many Ford & lincoln cars since arround 2000I believe including the Lincoln LS, Ranger & Explorer.

They are all the same, the S,N&W refer to the gear ratios installed with S being standard, N being narrow and W being wide.

If it works in the LS it probably can be adapted to the S197, It was designed on the LS platform.
