Default Tranny problem. o.O

Automatic. Okay today I was backing out of my drive way and I got on the road and stopped and put it in "D" and nothing happened. It was like i was in N I hit gas and it just revved. So I shifted back to "P" and then back to D and it took about 3secs but it finally went into gear. I have never had this problem and I drive my car every day. So it has never done this out of about 600 times. I drove the car and played around with the shifter a bit and it wouldnt do it again. So what was wrong???

Car specs
Miles: 14,800
Gas: Full tank
It does need an oil change soon.

quick question, when we put our cars in D does it have to engage right away or does it take about a second?

When you initially pulled it back to D it probably didn't get locked in completely or you released the button between gears (between N and D or between D and 3).
