It might have something to due with the rpm's. Auto's and manuals will be at a different rpm range at the same speed so my theory is they did this to cut down on any dronning.
exactly what i was thinking......sounds plausable

I was at my ford dealer today and the parts guy looked it up, the difference is the nicer rolled tips. Makes sense.

That is crazy. I think the stock mufflers could be a lot louder.
