Default Balance Tires?

I am taking the Mustang in for tire rotation (11.95) Inspection (free) and also wanted the tires rebalanced and have the wheel weights put on the inside. The service manager told me the tires would not balance as good if the wheel weights were on the inside of the wheel as the outside. Any truth to that? He didn't want to charge me for something that would not work .

Might be a small amount of truth to what he is saying but mostly BS. I have been having my wheel weights installed on the inside for over 20 years.

It drives me crazy to see people spend thousands of dollars for wheels and then let some grease monkey hammer on weights. Instant damage to new wheels!!!!!!!!!!! I don't even believe that the OEMs are justified in putting weights on the outside. Again, spending thousands for a special wheel package from Ford and wheels are damaged when you take delivery on a new car or truck. On my Expedition, I removed weights from outside and reintalled on inside within the 1st week of ownership to minimize damage. No difference in ride.

Don't let em do it, and a word to the wise. You have to watch the techs carefully. They get so used to doing the same process over and over. Several times when purchasing tires I have had to stop the tech right before he was going to damage my wheel. (after already telling manager) Good Luck.

Depends on the rim and how much weight is needed to balance them.

this link will give you the best, most simple difference between the two types of balancing.

You're looking for a static balance. While they can put weights on the outer edges of the rim behind the face of the rim, it does make it harder to balance vs a dynamic balance where the weights sit out the oter edges of the rim.

Dynamic usually works pretty well on newer rims that don't have any real wear on them (read dents/dings/abuse) Those that have bends, kinks, or other anomolies may not balance properly if done using a static balance.
