Default Oil filter change between oil changes

Can you just change the oil filter without draining any oil? Is the filter high enough that no oil will not drain out?

Just curious why you would want to change it and not change your oil?

I've read others here change oil with synthetics at 10,000 miles but change the filter after 5000 miles. I know this sounds crazy and I'd never do it but I have a relative who claims he never changes his oil but only his filter and his truck has 250,000 miles on it. He says the oil doesn't get dirty, only the filter. Keep a clean filter in and you'll keep clean oil.

Can you imagine how black the oil would be if we did that?

synthetics can go a lot longer then reguler oil because it takes longer to break down the synthetic but it will break down. as for the filter yes it should be change out about 5k miles if your running synthetics because it will get clogged up with junk and reduce flow and pressure.

Yes, you can change the filter between oil changes. You'll lose roughly 1/4 quart depending on the capacity of the filter and any drainback. You'll also have a little oil drip out of the filter when you break the seal.

I use Amsoil oil and Amsoil's filter which is rated for 25,000 miles and I do my oil and filter changes at 10,000 mile intervals. I'm not sure I'm comfortable going 10,000 miles on the Motorcraft filter and the Amsoil filter is about 5 times as much. But the extra $$ is worth not having to hassle with the filter at the 5,000 mile point.

As much as I hate to admit it, I DO go 10,000 miles on the crap Fram filter on my SUV (as I've done on other cars) using Mobil1. Since I've put over 150,000 on each of those vehicles with no oil consumption, performance degradationor engine problems, I think I can safely say it hasn't been detrimental. I may be crazy but not enough so to do that to my sweet baby Stang...[8D]

The additive package wears out long before the oil will.

The idea of only changing the filter and not the oil is a valid one using the amsoil. However, in order for the engine to receive the proper protection you must use the amsoil dual filter systems which traps particles down to one micron. Using any conventional filter with this theory will result in added engine wear in the long term.

Not a bad idea for very high mileage cars which get driven a lot. (over the road truckers use this concept a lot) But for just regular drivers - regular oil changes (with filter) work just as well.
