They are next to useless. They can be broken off with a pair of pliers, or if you stick a screwdriver under the flange and just give a little leverage it will unscew like it had the key in it. The old metal one's from the 70's are almost indestuctible, the plastic new one's are more for a false sense of security for the owner. Besides with the saddlebag gas tank in the middle of the car, I'd guess that it would be close to impossibleto siphon gas from the filler neck. And a Mustang seems like it would be a pain in the @ss to crawl under to puncture the tank; too low. If I was a gas thief I'd be under one of those huge 25-30 gallon suv tanks.
So you're thinking it's not even worth it?
It's like The Club; might stop a kid who doesn't know anything, but a pro can get it off faster than you can unlock it with a key. Besides, its not even a visual deterrent, sitting behind the gas door. I wouldn't waste my money on it, but if it makes someone sleep better at night.....

Are there any reports here of gas that's been stolen from someone's S197?

its like any deturent....it is just that...not a failsafe solution. as far as anyone having issues gas theft....here is tampa florida...it has happened...I dont think the thieves target s197's per say...they target anything that carries gas ...my reasoning was just to make me feel better....in my position I hold at work I also can be a target of someone wanting to F&*K with my gas tank and again...they still can but at least with this and the security camera over top of my car at work it is a deturent..(pardon the spelling if it is spelled wrong)...anyway..its up to you if you feel $10-18 is a waste of money....by the way...locking the doors will not prevent your car from being stolen, but we still do it??

Honestly I think Blue Meanie is right. It's probably a waste of money.

Anything that would slow down a thief, even if it only takes them a few seconds to defeat or will make some noise... ANYTHING that would attract attention and/or delay... MAY deter a thief. IMO, anything that would increase your odds is worth considering. Yes, nothing is fail-safe.

Haha Nuke. Iknow you don't have one.

Seriously, If you have $20 to waste, try getting past one. If after 10 minutes you can't open the locking cap as fast as the stocker......well you probably shouldn't be stealing gas then.

Like I said, locking gas cap, club, wheel locks; all exist to make the owner feel better. WHatever floats your boat.

Ford has a theft locking system built in place in the fuel system.

Going from Blue Meanie's post, does anyone know of a metal locking gas cap for the mustang?

A locking gas cap is a waste of money as stealing gas does not work on a mustang which is why no one has reported it on a S197, but it is useful to prevent vandalism, so I have one myself.

Really? How does it work?

(I love this forum! I've learned more about my new car in 2 days that I have about my last 2 cars in 8 years!)

Stant here too.
$20to help deter an idiot from messing with the stang...why not. We have spentalot more money on other deterrents. Although it is somewhat a inconvenience to unlock with all your keys on the keyring. I always end up hitting the car around the gas cap with one of my keys because of it. Not a big deal though.

I also want to hear about this fuel system locking system mentioned above .

I believe he's talking about how it's almost impossible to siphon gasoline from the tank on an s197 due to the design of the tank itself and/or the filler neck.
