Default Axle weights? Huh

Was just cruising an other board and I was browsing a thread about weight reduction and a guy had this posted up

"I relieved about 30 lbs by removing the axle weights on my car. Some of the 2005 to 2006 mustangs came from the factory with these weights on them. They are huge blocks of metal bolted under the axles."

I will have to take a peak in the morning but I could imagine this....

N E one seen this?

Yes...

Mainly on v6 7.5" rear ends. I had them on my old 7.5" rear when I took it out to swap in the 8.8" takeoff. They're called "balancers" apparently.

They can be seen here in this pic I have of my now FOR SALE (hint hint) 7.5" rear. They're located on the inside of each lower control arm bracket.

So what happens if you remove them? Also this is the WORST location to remove weight from the car possible.

Those weights are on most all mustangs. My 07 GT has them. Read TacoBills how to thread on installing BMR LCAs and relocation brackets. He removed them and test drove with no problems. They are most likely there for

I remember hearing stories from the 50's and 60's where they welded chunks of railroad track to the back axel to shift the center of gravity back.. I can't imagine removing these weights would make THAT much difference.

They dont. They are designed (told to me by Ford factory engineer) to absorb and limit wheel hop due to crappy Factory stamped UCA/LCA's and lighter weight axle tubes...

I pulled em off and tossed em when I installed aftermarket control arms and springs. Car handled fine without em.
