My Hurst rattled because it was defective. The spherical bearing would rattle in its housing and the shifter had vertical play because of this. I loved the look and feel of it, but rattling shifters are for the birds. Sold it.

Hurst posted a fix over a year ago on another forum... us thin rubber washers between the chrome handle and base... locktite the allen screws.

Mine hasn't rattled since I did the fix. You can find rubber washers at your local Autozone.

That's not the problem. The handle is not loose. The shifting mechanism is loose.

If that's the case why has the fix solved dozens of complaints across multiple boards? You replaced your Hurst, so how would you know if the Hurst fix works or not? How do you know yours wasn't a isolated case? Brenspeed even told you when you had the problem they hadn't heard of it. They offered to give you a replacement, did you take them up on it? did the replacement have the same problem?

I installed a good bunch of those...
None of them are lose or vibrating, unless customers decided not to tell me about it.
I did everyone of them my way though.
Better washers and longer bolts with nuts on the other side.
Seems to work, no complains...

I agree that the longer bolt and threadlocker and lock washer fix does work IF your handle is loose. It seems as if the OP does not have this problem, so I think it's the same problem mine had....and a few others.

I did inform Brenspeed of the situation and ordered another Hurst from them, but right out of the box it had the same issue. All you have to do is hold the whole assembly and pull up and down on the shifter arm. If it moves, it's a bad one. If not, GREAT!!! You were lucky! There should be no play at all in that spherical bearing....just like the stock shifter or my Steeda tri-ax.

A few others have noticed the same thing, and it seems to be from guys who have bought the Hurst in the last year and a half. I think Hurst just had some quality control issues that they tried to ignore. I really wish it hadn't rattled, because it was a sweet addition to the stang.

I recall one member trying to fix his by making a plastic washer to fit against the bearing and the sleeve on top holding it in. He said it worked, but I wouldn't imagine the plastic held up too long.
