Chrome rim storage over the winter?
#11
Its been 2 yrs now and mine have been stored in the garage, on the car, partially under the car cover after a nice coat of wax.... no issues and they look just as good as the day they were bought. I will not use cooking oil or WD on the chrome and no issues with any chrome like in the engine bay or interior too. Remember that humidity is less in the winter (due to cold) and use some type of barrier under the car too....whether it is epoxy floors, 8 mil thick plastic or rubber mats and my garage doesn't have heat.... If the car ever saw snow (which it wont) I would do that to the rims (WD-40) but not if they never see snow or salt. It the water and salt that corrodes the chrome not moisture in the air or my car and many others with chrome would have rusted already etc.....JMO

I think it also depends if they have been clear coated at all by the manufacturer. I only drive in winter on clear dry days when any salt has been cleared off the roads mostly with only salt dust remaining. Here in Michigan there are pleny of days that are above freezing and on my sunny south facing driveway I wash my car. I just coat my rims with car wax.
I put my chrome wheels, with my summer tires in the garage, waxed, and I use my Ford stock 64W 18" brushed aliminum bullit wheels (waxed) for fair weather winter driving with altra high performance all season goodyear F1 eagles that are slightly seiped in the center tread. 275/40-18 rears 26.7 height diameter, and 255/45-18 fronts 27.0 height diameter. For the rear, thats the widest tire sold in all season tires I could find, with one of the three highest tread grip ratings, and they look good. So far with sprits bottle washing and rinsing, my aluminiums wheels are fine after 2 winters of this.
I also have an underbody pressure spray head for the underbody, which ejects salt dust easily. I'ts the slush born salt that kills you because it creates a film of salt that must be contact washed off.
With 474 rwhp they still grip well with feathering the gas in 1st and second, amd 3rd, 4th, and 5th are still strong, fast and grippy fun even in the 30's tempature. Erik
