Patience and practice.......first gear is the hardest to get down (smoothly)....take your time and if you smell the clutch burning take a break! I would not recommend practicing on a stang (esp one with an aftermarket shifter)...but that's JMO.

It is not hard learning in an S197 it was the first manual car I owned. I guess I had a slight advantage though since I had road a motorcycle for 2 years before I bought the car. I found it very easy to learn in this car. I never have any problems shifting the car except I occasionally miss 3rd when I get on it hard never when I'm just cruising or driving around though. This will soon be fixed when I get the new hurst.

Please whatever you do don't forget to teach her how to downshift. I see so many females that drive stick that have no idea how to downshift they coast to every light from like a mile away. Feathering will be the hardest part the rest will come easy. Also tell her it doesn't take a lot of force to change gears a lite touch down or up and the car will just find the gear because they are so close together. Only one you really have to push over for is 5th.

If you have the cash, send her to a driving school. They have manuals available and she can tear their clutch up, not yours.

Definitely try and let her learn on a less powerful car. A 4 cylinder would be a much better way to start off. And yeah, a huge parking lot away from light poles would be the best place to start.

When it comes to manuals some people pick it up real well and others just can't get the feel for it. Don't forget to be patient with her, too... I know how frustrating it can get trying to teach someone to drive stick.
